В 1983 году исполнил главную роль в фильме «Париж, Техас» режиссёра Вима Вендерса. Стэнтон играл в картинах режиссёров Сэма Пекинпа, Джона Милиуса, Дэвида Линча, Монте Хеллмана, Фрэнсиса Форда Копполы.

По словам агента Стэнтона, актер умер в больнице Лос-Анджелеса от естественных причин.
