A young idealist and graduate of prestigious US universities, Devon Pravesh gets a job at Chestnut Park Hospital, where he is mentored by Conrad Hawkins, a young but highly skilled therapist. Under his cynical and strict guidance, Devon learns what no university course can teach: the joy of successfully saving a patient's life and, at the same time, all the flaws of a system ruled by cruel and mercenary bureaucrats and businessmen such as leading surgeon Randolph Bell and his ex-wife Lane Hunter.
