Родилась 10 февраля 1974 года в Питтсфилде, штат Массачусетс, США. Она старшая из четырёх детей Энн и Марка Митчеллов. Её отец был рабочим на заводе General Electric, а мать работала в банке. Ещё ребёнком Элизабет принимала участие в детской игровой передаче Finders Keepers на канале Nickelodeon. После школы Элизабет поступила в Пенсильванский университет, который окончила с отличием, а в 1998 году завершила учёбу в American Conservatory Theater.
