Ребёнком Райан появился в Вест-эндской постановке мюзикла «Отверженные» в роли Гавроша. Мэтт окончил Бристольскую театральную школу Олд Вик (Bristol Old Vic Theatre School) в 2003 году, а в 2004 году стал работать в Королевской Шекспировской компании (Royal Shakespeare Company).
