Учился в школе Waterford Kamhlaba, затем изучал английский язык и драматургию в Кейптаунском университете.

Ричард Грант был членом актёрской труппы кейптаунского «Космического театра» (Space Theatre), в 1982 году окончательно перебрался в Лондон.

В 2005 году снял автобиографический фильм о своём детстве и родителях по собственному сценарию — «Вау-Вау», в главных ролях выступили Габриэл Бирн,Миранда Ричардсон, Эмили Уотсон и Джули Уолтерс.
