Джон Шрэпнел родился в Англии. Он закончил городскую лондонскую школу в тоже самое время, как и режиссер Михаел Аптид. Джон отлично играл Гамлета в школьной пьесе, под началом Михаеля. Актерская жизнь захватила Джона и вскоре он уже выступал на сценах лучших лондонских театров.

Его отец — журналист, автор и парламентский корреспондент Норман Шрэпнел (Norman Shrapnel).

У него трое сыновей — актёр Лэкс Шрэпнел (Lex Shrapnel), журналист и писатель Джо Шрэпнел (Joe Shrapnel) и режиссёр Том Шрэпнел (Tom Shrapnel).

Его предок — генерал Генри Шрэпнел (Henry Shrapnel) (1761-1842).
