Тиа родилась 2 января, 1967 в Гонолулу (Гавайи). У неё филиппинские, китайские и испанские корни. В детстве она мечтала стать певицей, и в 1985 году в 17-летнем возрасте она участвовала в конкурсе Star Search, но не победила в нём, однако совершенно случайная встреча с родителями местного продюсера в магазине позволила Каррере получить роль в низкобюджетном фильме «Кошмар зомби».
