Родился в Нью-Йорке в семье продюсера, сценариста и киноактёра Доминика Данна и Эллен Беатриз Данн (урожд. Гриффин), которая основала общество борьбы за права жертв «Justice for Homicide Victims».

Гриффин Данн является старшим братом актрисы Доминик Данн и племянником Джона Грегори Данна и Джоан Дидион.

В 1973 году женился на Кейт Форте (Kate Forte), но в следующем году брак был аннулирован. С 9 декабря 1989 по 1995 год состоял в браке с американской актрисой Кэри Лоуэлл (Carey Lowell), где родилась дочь Ханна Данн (Hannah Dunne).
