Родился 11 марта 1981 года в Анклам, ГДР (ныне ФРГ).
Изучал драматическое искусство в театральной школе "Hochschule für Schauspielkunst "Ernst Busch".С 2000 года - в икно и на ТВ. С 2004 года - на театральной сцене. Играл в берлинских театрах Volksbühne и Hebbel.
Маттиас Швайгхёфер признан одним из самых перспективных и талантливых актеров Европы.
Живет в Берлине с женой и дочерью.
