Окончил Академию драматического искусства в Риме. Был актером театра "Стабиле" в Генуе. Карьера Паоло Боначелли в итальянском кино и телевидении началась еще в 1970-е годы и с успехом продолжается.

Снимался в фильмах выдающихся киномастеров: Микеланджело Антониони, Пьера Паоло Пазолини, Алана Паркера, Тинто Брасса, Марко Беллоккио, Лилианы Кавани, Роберто Бениньи.
