Учился в Университете Калифорнии в Санта-Барбаре, а затем посещал Калифорнийский университет, Лос-Анджелес.

В 2004 году Райан основал компанию Relativity Media и стал ее исполнительным директором. В 2008 году компания начала сотрудничество с Sony Pictures, Entertainment, Lions Gate Entertainment, Walt Disney Pictures по финансированию их фильмов до 2015 года.

В кино дебютировал в качестве продюсера короткометражного фильма "Jerry V. Death" (2005).
