Родился 10 июня 1952, Берлин, Германия — немецкий актер театра и кино.
С 1973 по 1976 годы Детлеф учился в Академии драматического искусства имени Эрнста Буша. Свою актерскую карьеру он начал с Театра имени Ганса Отто.
В 1985 году актер переехал в Западную Германию, где начал свою карьеру на телевидении.
Большей известности Бирштедт добился благодаря озвучиванию и дубляжу.
