Родился 13 октября 1950, Бронкс, Нью-Йорк — американский драматург, сценарист, режиссёр театра и кино.

Окончил Школу культуры, образования и человеческого развития при Нью-Йоркском университете.

За сценарий фильма "Moonstruck" (1987), Шэнли получил премию "Оскар" и WGA Award (Screen). В 1990 состоялся дебют Шэнли как режиссера - он снял фильм "Joe Versus the Volcano".

В 2005 году пьеса Шэнли "Сомнение" была награждена Пулитцеровской премией, "Drama Desk Award" и премией "Тони".

В 2008 году Шэнли стал режиссером и сценаристом фильма "Сомнение", за этот фильм он был номинирован на премию "Оскар".
