После тщательной подготовки к актерской карьере в Южном методистском университете, Пауэрс провел несколько лет в местном театре, прежде чем появился на телевидении, сыграв в 1981 году микроскопическую роль в "Cruising". Но уже следующий год принес ему премию "Эмми" за исполнение роли преподобного Джима Джонса в телевизионном фильме "The Guyana Tragedy". А еще через год Пауэрс вступил в "клуб классических детективов", получив роль частного детектива Филипа Марлоу в телесериале.
