После окончания колледжа поступил в Чикагский университет. Работал учителем.
Участвовал в театральных постановках. В кино дебютировал в 1977 году. Самую свою известную роль сыграл в комедийном сериале «Кувалда».
Всего Дэвид Раш снялся более чем в 80 фильмах и сериалах.
В 1976 году женился на Хизер Лаптон, в их семье трое детей.
