Родился 14 июня 1941 года в Москве.Сын генерала, окончил Суворовское училище, учился в военной академии. Но вопреки воле отца пошел в театральное училище.На вступительных экзаменах в Щепкинское училище, на самом важном, третьем, туре, увидев в комиссии Игоря Ильинского, не смог произнести ни слова. Однако был принят благодаря педагогу Леониду Волкову. Окончил Театральное училище им. М.С. Щепкина при Малом театре (1962). С 1962 — актер Малого театра. Народный артист РСФСР (1989).
