Родился 20 июля 1901 года в Москве. Учился в школе Малого театра.С 1922 года в труппе МХАТа. Характерный актёр, особенное внимание уделял мастерству сценической речи, искусству перевоплощения.
Преподавал в Школе-студии имени Немировича-Данченко (1945-1959). Народный артист РСФСР (1948).Народный артист СССР (1963).
Ушёл из жизни 28 сентября 1969 года в Москве, похоронен на Новодевичьем кладбище (7 участок).
