Родился 30 апреля 1940 года в Куинсе (Нью-Йорк) в семье италоамериканцев Жозефины и Майкла под именем Джеральд Томмазо Де Луиз (сокращённо Джерри Де Луиз). Актёрскому мастерству обучался в Актёрской студии под управлением Ли Страсберга.Рано стал вдовцом, его супруга Глория скончалась в 1974 году, оставив ему пятилетнюю дочь (род. в 1969) Анну Морею.
