Родился 18 октября 1935 года. В 1954 году переехал в Нью-Йорк, работал на заводе. В 1967 году на вечеринке его случайно заметил режиссёр и пригласил на пробы. В 1969 году на съёмках в Сиднее познакомился со своей будущей женой.В феврале 2006 года Бойл попал в больницу, где у него обнаружили рак лёгкого. Ему была сделана операция, вскоре после которой у актёра случился сердечный приступ. Следующий приступ 12 декабря 2006 года стал фатальным. Бойл умер в своем доме в Нью-Йорке.
