Родился 17 июля, 1946 в небольшой английской деревеньке Энфилд-Плейн в графстве Дарем. Его отец был шахтёром, и как и мать очень верующим. Обучался в младшей школе Энфилд-Плейна, а затем был отправлен для обучения в среднюю школу Консетта, где в предпоследний год обучения сыграл свою первую роль — Петруччо в пьесе Укрощение строптивой, а через год — Гамлета.
