Родился 16 мая 1955, США — американский моряк торгового флота и прозаик.

Окончил Винчестерскую среднюю школу в 1973 году. Филлипс поступил в Массачусетский университет в Амхерсте и планировал изучать международное право, но позже перевёлся в Массачусетскую морскую академию, которую закончил в 1979 году. Во время своего обучения Филлипс подрабатывал водителем такси в Бостоне.

Ричард Филлипс бывший капитан судна MV Maersk Alabama, которое в апреле 2009 года было захвачено сомалийскими пиратами. Капитан пробыл в плену у пиратов пять дней.

После освобождения Филлипс написал книгу под названием A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea. Кинокомпания Columbia Pictures приобрела права на экранизацию этой книги весной 2010 года.

Филлипс вернулся в море спустя четырнадцать месяцев после нападения пиратов.
