Родители Рика Авилеса эмигрировали из Пуэрто-Рико в США в конце 1940-х годов в поисках лучшего образа жизни. Они жили на Манхэттене, Нью-Йорк, где Рик и родился.

В 1970-х и 1980-х он работал комиком в ночном клубе в Гринвич-Виллидж в Нью-Йорке. С 1981 года снимался в кино. Прославился ролью Вилли Лопеса из фильма «Привидение» (1990). Всего сыграл около 30-ти ролей в фильмах и телесериалах.

Путём принятия героина Авилес заразился ВИЧ и скончался 17 марта 1995 года в возрасте 42-х лет от осложнений СПИДа.
