Родился 25 августа 1957 в семье американского археолога Чарльза МакБерни и британского секретаря Энн Фрэнсис Эдмондстоун. МакБерни изучал английскую литературу в Кембридже. После смерти отца он уехал в Париж и обучался в театре при институте Жака Лекока. МакБерни основал театр Complicite, который сейчас гастролирует по всему миру. Он был в числе сценаристов и продюсеров фильма «Мистер Бин на отдыхе» (2007).
