Ховард Казанян окончил Университет Южной Калифорнии. Пока он учился, он познакомился с молодым Джорджем Лукасом, и они не только стали братьями в кинобратстве «Delta Kappa Alpha», но и лучшими друзьями.

Его первыми работами включают работа первого помощника режиссёра в фильме Альфреда Хичкока «Семейный заговор» и второго помощника режиссёра в фильме «Дикая банда» режиссёра Сэма Пекинпы.
