Джон Пайпер-Фергюсон родился в Мордиалоке (Мельбурн, Виктория, Австралия). Он сын олимпийской пловчихи Кэтлин (урождённой Макнэми) и Ричарда Фергюсона. Почти сразу после рождения ребёнка семья переехала в Ванкувер. Джон учился в Handsworth Secondary School, а позднее с отличием окончил Университет Альберты со степенью бакалавра изобразительных искусств.
