Родители — выходцы из Китая. Джемма изучала юриспруденцию в Worcester College. В 2008 году окончила драматический центр Лондона. В 2006 году участвовала в британской версии проекта «Подиум».

Дебютировала на телевидении в 2006 году. В 2009 году сыграла в фильме «Экзамен». В 2011 году снималась в сериале «Тайный дневник девушки по вызову». С 2015 года играет в сериале «Люди».

С 2011 года встречается с актёром Джейком Уайтхоллом.
