Окончил Университет штата Теннесси. Фрэнк профессионально занимался футболом, играл защитником в клубе «Chicago Bears», в сезоне 1967 года появлялся в 6 играх НФЛ.
Дебютировал МакРей в криминальном сериале «Коломбо» (1968 – 2003), в роли лейтенанта Робертсона.
