В 1989 году переехал в Лос-Анджелес.
В 2012 году Лоренц дебютировал в качестве режиссера, поставив ленту «Крученый мяч».
Три картины, спродюсированные Робертом Лоренцом, номинировались на премию Американской киноакдемии «Оскар» в категории «Лучший фильм» — «Таинственная река» в 2004 году, «Письма с Иводзимы» в 2007 году и «Снайпер» в 2015 году.
