Родилась 22 июня 1933 года в Москве. Окончила школу-студию МХАТ (курс А. М. Карева) в 1955 году и была принята в труппу Московского передвижного драмтеатра.

В 1957 году Людмила Иванова переходит в театр «Современник».

Автор многих бардовских песен, в том числе известной песни «Только мне все кажется, почему-то кажется, что между мною и тобой ниточка завяжется». (А вот автором часто приписываемой Л. Ивановой песни «Весеннее танго» («Приходит время») был её муж, известный бард Валерий Миляев). Выступала с концертами, дружила с Анной Герман, Никитиными.

Художественный руководитель и главный режиссёр детского музыкального театра «Экспромт».
