Окончил Всесоюзный институт кинематографии (1964, мастерская Сергея Герасимова и Тамары Макаровой).
В 1964-1992 годах — актёр Театра-студии киноактёра.
С 1988 по 2000 годы — президент Гильдии актёров советского кино (с 1991 года — Гильдии актёров кино России).
Народный артист РСФСР (1989).
Жена — актриса Наталья Гвоздикова.
Ушёл из жизни 18 января 2012 года.
