Marcel Marx, a former bohemian writer, moves to the port city of Le Havre and becomes a bootblack. The occupation, though not very profitable, gives Marcel a sense of usefulness to people. Having given up on his writing ambitions, Marcel is quite content with life, spending it between work, home, and the nearest pub.
