Robin Longstride, previously interested only in self-preservation, is in service to King Richard's army against the French. Upon Richard's death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation. There he meets Lady Marion and Sir Walter Loxley and agrees to help them by pretending to be Sir Robert Loxley in the hopes this will hold off the crown from claiming the lands. But other forces are at work that could push the country into civil war, as well as open the shores to foreign invasion.
